This study conducted a survey on the recognition and demand such as recognition level, policy necessity, service demand and policy demand by supply types in order to provide the basic data for successful settlement of agro-healing services. According to the survey on awareness, 45.2% of respondents were aware of the healing farming, and 31.3% of respondents had experience in participating in the agro-healing services. 63.6% of respondents replied that they were experiencing reasons for participating in agro-healing services. Respondents who had no knowledge of agro-healing services responded that 76.7% of respondents said they would not participate. More than two-thirds of respondents in all types indicated that they needed agro-healing services. As a result of evaluating the maximum willingness to pay, there was a willingness to pay for farm work healing about 15,800 won, horticulture healing about 14,800 won, forest healing about 13,400 won, and animal assisted healing about 17,000 won. Improving accessibility and strengthening awareness were high priorities for inconveniences and improvements. 70.1% of the respondents said that policies for agro-healing services are needed. Development of agro-healing programs and contents was the first priority for support policy. The result of this study is expected to provide reference data that can be suggested for agro-healing policy establishment.
The rural areas in South Korea have changed rapidly in the process of national land development. Rural landscapes have become discoloured, and their attractiveness has decreased as cities have expanded. But the attractiveness or multifunctional values of rural areas has become more important in contemporary society around the world. According to this social demand, the efforts of conserving the rural landscape are of high priority and the recovery of ruralism in the area is required. This study has tried to understand how the public image of ruralism in South Korea has been influenced by the news media. The study retrieved news articles using the web searching portal site from the six keywords, commonly used to refer to ruralism, including ‘rural landscape’, ‘rural community’, ‘rural tourism’, ‘rural life’, ‘rural amenity’, and ‘rural environment’. News data from the six keywords were also collected respectively from within the year-period of 2004-05, 2007-08, 2012-13, and 2016-17. In the text mining analysis, the nouns with high Degree Centrality were figured out, and the changes by year-period were identified. Then, LDA topic analysis was performed for text datasets of six keywords. As a result, the study found that the news articles gave an informed focus on only a handful of issues such as ‘poor rural living condition’, ‘regional or village improvement projects’, ‘rural tourism promotion projects’, and ‘other government support projects’. On the other hand, nouns related to virtues and values in the rural landscape were less shown in news articles. These results have become more apparent in recent years. In the topic analysis, 35 topics were identified. ‘village development projects’, ‘rural tourism’, and ‘urban-rural exchange projects’ were appeared repeatedly in several keywords. Among the topics, there are also topics closely related to ruralism such as ‘rural landscape conservation’, ‘eco-friendly rural areas’, ‘local amenity resources’, ‘public interest values of agriculture’, and ‘rural life and communities’. The study presented an image map showing ruralism in South Korea using a network map between all topics and keywords. At the end of the study, implications for Korean rural area policy and research directions were discussed.
Agricultural water for crops are faced with the need to improve the use efficiency due to the impact of climate change. Water productivity (WP) is known as a good indicator for assessing resources efficiency. This study was conducted to assess WP of rice and potential water consumption (PWC) as new indicator for water use efficiency assessment. The average of WP was 0.7 kg/㎥, and Jeonbuk had the highest WP as 0.83 kg/㎥. Kangwon and Kyungbuk had the lowest WP as 0.59 kg/㎥. PWC showed the same trend because of rice consumption per capita, but Total PWC considering population living in each province showed the different trend with PWC. Every year, the changing patterns of WP was increasing little by little, and the patterns of PWC was decreasing greatly than WP. These results mean that WP has been slowly improved through breed development and irrigation techniques, and PWC was affected by reduced rice consumption and WP increasing. PWC could also be useful as an indicator to compare the water use efficiency between provinces or nations.
The Evaluation of Integrated Agricultural Resource Management Policy through Water-Energy-Food Nexus - An Application to Management of Aquifer Recharge Project -

Korean agriculture experienced rapid changes in its production structure to respond fluctuations on external conditions, and these changes have increased the dependence between agricultural resources and negative environmental externalities from agricultural production. As a tool for managing agricultural resources and reducing negative environmental effects from agricultural production, this study employs water-energy-food nexus for integrated resource management. To show the necessity of an integrated approach, this study evaluated three policy scenarios including changes in capital interest, water capacity, and energy cost. The results show that three scenarios have unintended consequences for farmers’ incomes and their use of resources. Also the unintended consequences of government policies also affected farms’ vulnerability to environmental changes. In particular, the expansion of financing for the establishment of non-circulating water curtain facilities did not have a significant effect on the crop switching of farms. In addition, increasing the amount of available water through the aquifer recharge project leads to the installation of non-circulating water curtain facilities in zucchini farm. It raises dependence on groundwater in agricultural production, thereby increasing farmers’ vulnerability to groundwater shortages. These results imply that the agricultural sector needs to consider the interrelationship between agricultural resources when designing or evaluating policies.
Analysis of Changes in Residents’ Perception to Establish Resident-driven Management System for Rural Nonpoint Pollution Sources - Rural field forum process -

More than half of the nonpoint sources of polluting water occur in cultivating farmlands in rural areas. Agricultural nonpoint sources are discharged from large areas of farmlands, making it difficult to collect or treat pollutants. Farmland source management is known to be the most effective, and preventive management by improving farming methods is the key to reduce nonpoint pollution. At present, more than 30% of the pollutants flowing into the rivers and lakes are nonpoint pollutants caused by agricultural activities. As a countermeasure, it is more preferable to develop and apply optimal farming management techniques for agricultural nonpoint pollution management basically than to apply existing water quality management techniques. Because of the characteristics of nonpoint source pollution, it is necessary to manage farmlands in rural areas, so the willingness and competence of the residents is most important. The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand the process of changing the cognition of residents through capacity education and survey for nonpoint pollution management in rural areas. This study conducted intensive resident competency education and examined the process of changing resident awareness through three surveys. As a result of this study, it was found that continuous education and activities for rural non-point pollution management are necessary for raising awareness of residents and managing non-point pollution effectively, showing possibility of change residents’ perception.
The Effects of the Level of Plant Growing Activity on the Subjective Health, Depression, and Human Relations of the Elderly Participating in Weekend Farms

The purpose of this study was to investigate the general characteristics of the elderly who participate in the planting activities of weekend farms and the effect of the planting activity levels on the subjective health, depression, and human relationships of the elderly. Data were collected and analyzed using subjective health, depression, and human relationship measures that can represent physical, mental, and social health. The main results were as follows. The educational level, the status of spouses, and the number of diseases of the general characteristics of the elderly who participated in the weekend farm showed significant differences in all subjective health, depression, and human relationships. Plant cultivation activity level was positively correlated with the subjective health of the elderly and had a significant effect. The higher the level of plant cultivation activity, the more positively it affected the human relationship. Plant cultivation activity was negatively correlated with the depression of the elderly.
The purpose of this study is to survey and analyze the operating state and characteristics of domestic and foreign green care, prioritize the facilities and programs for green care introduction through expert survey of importance, and thereby to provide a basic material for introducing green care in facilities in Rural Development Project districts, including domestic rural experience facilities. Domestic and foreign literature was analyzed in order to classify the necessary facilities programs, of green care, and the analysis results were modified and supplemented through Expert Delphi Survey. Based on the results, AHP based importance survey was conducted. In terms of the facilities and programs for green care introduction, necessary facilities (H/W) were categorized into four types (accommodation facility, resting facility, experience facility, therapy facility) and S/W programs into three types (learning experience type, therapy type, and care type). To verify the reliability of the AHP based importance survey, Consistency Index (C.I.) was analyzed. As a result, the C.I. value of nine respondents ranged from 0.000 to 0.083 so that the survey was found to have high consistency. The importance of S/W programs was 0.627, and that of H/W facilities was 0.373. For green care introduction, programs were found to be more important. Regarding the categories of necessary facilities, therapy facility had the highest value, or 0.348; experience facility 0.253; accommodation facility 0.211; resting facility 0.188. Therefore, therapy facility and experience facility were found to be important. In case of S/W programs, therapy type had the highest value, or 0.499, and learning experience type (0.255) and care type (0.246) were similarly important. Generally, the categories that had high importance values tended to show a remarkable difference in importance of their sub categories. In particular, facilities or therapy programs using natural ecology and forests were found to be highly important. In conclusion, it is required to actively review the introduction of active programs using resources, such as existing experience facilities and accommodation facilities and villages forests, and programs making the body and soul comfortable, such as natural ecology experience, Green Shower, and horticulture activity.
This paper analyzed the characteristics of population change from 2000 to 2018 in 466 mountainous areas using resident registration data from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and projected the population in those areas through 2050 with the cohort change ratio method. The population had dramatically decreased from 2000 to 2009. With the slowing population decrease after 2010, the population has increased gradually since 2014. Especially the population of ages over 65 in 2018 had increased 34% compared to 2000, while the working age population had decreased 29%. This shows that population aging becomes serious problems in the mountainous area. Assuming the cohort change ratios from 2010 to 2015 and child-woman ratio in 2015 remain constant, it appeared that the projected population of the mountainous area dropped to 1.26 million in 2030 and 820,000 in 2050. It is expected to have a population with an inverted pyramid structure showing a gender imbalance with more females in 60’s and 70’s. Although it continues to show the recent population growth in mountainous area, population in mountainous area is expected to consistently decrease. Therefore, it is required to develop policies and strategies to promote an influx of people into mountainous area for maintaining functionality and sustainability of mountainous areas.
The purpose of this study is to present a time series model of onion and garlic prices. After considering the various time series models, we calculated the appropriate time series models for each item and then selected the model with the minimized error rate by reflecting the monthly dummy variables and import data. Also, we examined whether the predictive power improves when we combine the predictions of the Korea Rural Economic Institute with the predictions of time series models. As a result, onion prices were identified as ARMGARCH and garlic prices as ARXM. Monthly dummy variables were statistically significant for onion in May and garlic in June. Garlic imports were statistically significant as a result of adding imports as exogenous variables. This study is expected to help improve the forecasting model by suggesting a method to minimize the price forecasting error rate in the case of the unstable supply and demand of onion and garlic.
Although the General Agricultural Fishing Village Development Project had a significant impact on the landscape formation and management in rural area, the rural landscape planning and project sectors was not stable by fluctuation variables. On the basic understanding the institutional status of rural landscape planning, some conclusions could be discussed as follows through the analysis of quantitative and qualitative changes and the background factors.
The rural landscape plan lacked its own legal and institutional foundations, and the landscape project of the General Agricultural Fishing Village Development Project was mainly focused on the environment-improving H/W project for expanding the basic living infrastructures. In order to reflect the characteristics of the region and become independent rural landscape management, it is necessary to change the contents so that the S/W business such as the deepening landscape awareness and empowerment linked with improving the physical landscape. To this end, it is necessary to establish a foundation for the rural landscape planning system to have its own status, and it seems to seek to supplement with what is included S/W contents reflecting the context of higher level landscape planning.
The landscape sector of the General Agricultural Fishing Village Development Project proved to be in the process of shrinking in both quantity and quality, despite the temporary expansion in the past. In addition, considering the distortion of the contents of landscape projects in rural sites, it seems that the rural landscape-related public project are now in a position to seek a new phase change beyond quantitative expansion. In particular, along with institutional improvements to secure the independent status of rural landscape planning that contributes to village community regeneration and social sustainability through the role of intermediary support organizations in landscape management activities. Through the integrated landscape plan, which is established in advance and led by the residents in the early stages, there is a need to change the direction to enhance meaning of the landscape planning goes beyond the facility design or space improvement.
This study is to give a three-dimensional view of the concept of rurality and ruralness in terms of time-span, perceived object and awareness level. In the precedent studies ruralness or rurality has been approached as the category of usefulness resources called amenity. This overlooked the perceived representation, institutional reference and rurality of ideological values. Rurality appears as a cumulative representation of being rural from the past to the present, but ruralness exists as a desirable form or value for the future. Through this study, it has been analyzed that ruralness consists of six realms such as environment, community, self-reliance, aesthetics, enjoyable amenity and settlement, and of three or four sub-realms by each amounting to 20 in total. According to the vocabulary listing by the survey to 30 experts, rurality for the past-present is mainly imagined as of natural environment, agriculture, landscape, and community history, while ruralness for the future is frequently described as of communities, settlement and self-reliance by number of references. Through the vocabulary extraction, 17 words in the level of mid-conception are induced including ecology, comfort, history, agriculture, landscape, place, culture, convenience, etc. In conclusion the concept of ruralness along with rurality could be organized into three different layers of perception consisting of representation, norms and usefulness.
The aim of this paper is to identify the characteristics of social economy in social farming practices, and to explore three core factors of experiment, openness and locality, which have a significant impact on the working-mechanism of social innovation. Though a few social farming practice appear nowadays in Korea, it can be witnessed social economic factors such as cooperation between networks and solidarity actors, pursuing social values in social farming. On the basis of the conceptual framework on the social economy characteristics, this study examines case analysis in order to find the possibilities as a social innovation of the social farming. Three farms perform multiple functions of care, labour integration, training in farming area, and sometimes make collaboration work with artists and local residents. Social farming can be social innovation practices in the view of the interaction of experiments, openness and locality within the context of an innovation process, networking, enhancing social capital.
